Donations made in 2017

During the course of 2017 the Trustees made donations to the following three organisations:

  • The Pushkin Prizes – a Scottish charity which the Trustees have supported on a number of occasions. It is a charity which offers a unique opportunity for 10 pupils from schools throughout Scotland to attend a five-day creative writing course at the Moniack Mhor Writers' Centre near Inverness. In parallel to the Scottish competition some 30 schools in St Petersburg, at one time the home of Alexander Pushkin, organise a poetry competition. A panel of judges in Russia then selects 12 of the best entries and pupils translate their work into English for judging by the judges in Scotland. The Russian prize-winners travel to Scotland where they attend the creative writing course with the Scottish winners.
  • The Scottish Poetry Library – David Summers was a keen member of the Poetry Library during his lifetime and the Trust has made donations over the years for various projects. During 2017 we were delighted to support the publication of an updated version of the book 'Gifted' by Robyn Marsack which tells the story of the mystery paper book sculptures by an anonymous artist which were discovered in various locations across Edinburgh in 2011.
  • The Borders Book Festival – a donation from the Trust was made to enable the organisers of the annual festival at Melrose to provide newer less established authors a platform to promote their work.

The cumulative total grants given out by the Trust since it started in 2013 to the end of 2016 has amounted to over £70,000.
